Eve always intrigued me, it seemed to offer way more possibilities than other MMOs, but at the same time never managed to grab me and keep me playing beyond 1 month like other MMOs have done. I've given it a few brief attempts in the past.
Anyway, I had 3 existing characters, the best with about 3 million skill points (my original character from many years ago) the worst was a brand new character from my last time in eve with about 800,000 skill points. I.e. All my toons are pretty newbie(ish).
After a bit of playing around the with the 3 toons, remembering how things worked, I decided to delete the newest toon and recreate one to see if I could find a starting toon that might grab my interest in the remaining time.
After waiting overnight I got to finish the delete and reroll. Now, I had been on the 'net and checked some sites about character creation, and they seemed to be basically describing it as I remembered, so I was expecting to get some choice as to skills and end up with a 800000ish skill point character. Umm big disapointment. 56000 skill points, and no choice as to what those points are.
I had to laugh at that. Is eve really trying to get people to rejoin by offering a character creation routine that produces toons with 1/14th the ability that it provided the last time I played (and yes I did initially play long enough ago to remember before it gave you the 800,000 sp toons as well).
Funnily enough, another mail arrived today.
From the latest email: "We are glad to see you've taken advantage of the free reactivation period, and we hope you have had a chance to experience some of the great features .... that have been added since last you played. "
I get a feeling that the character creation change may be one of the great new features, as most sites I found were still describing the older version. Yep I've had a chance to experience it. The banking crisis in Iceland must have imbued that land with a bizarre sense of humour, I'd have thought they would hope I DIDN'T experience that new feature.
OK - I could use the best toon I had and try to learn some skill area that I wanted to try, but that will take longer than 5 days and probably be tediously boring in the mean time (unlikely to entice me to subscribe). Or I can now start with a new toon and do the same .... mmm. At least before I could have created a toon with those key basic skills at level 4/5 and sort of got going straight away at a chosen career, whilst still being far behind the ability of those who have been doing it for far longer.
What great new features am I likely to see in 5 days on a fairly newish (or outright new) character? The only 'new' (to me) things I've vaguely heard about sound more like they are way beyond anything I'm going to be doing (i.e. no way will I gain the skills/equipment needed in 5 days).
Pointless post I know. But the way that all happened, waiting for the deletion time to pass, the disappointment of the new character followed by the mail about experiencing great new features just made my day.
PS on a more depressing note. Instead I spent a day with my original toon (combat oriented/amarr/frigate) trying to gain some standing to do level 2 agent missions, but after 40+ missions for level 1 agents (stupidly easy and several of them repeated) still was still only half way to the needed standing for the level 2 agent at the staion I had made 'home'. I did find a level 2 agent I could do missions for in another system - and got what was a repeat of a mission I had already done twice that day for the level 1 agents... gee so worth waiting for. Maybe it was the numbers of destroyers and the cruiser that were the 'level 2' part, though I'm sure I had blown through numerous of those already in level 1 missions as well.
Now, that is eve as I remember it |
